North Shore September

Post by tws »

Looking to head over to the North Shore this September after getting inspired whatching Simon's latest dvd.

Also after heading to Indo for the last 5 years to escape our winter for a few weeks. I thought it maybe time to head some where else. It is also not to costly to get there.

Can any local guys let me know what sort of size, consistancy, winds and crowds I could expect at this time of year?

Regards

TWS

Some Septembers are spectacular, I'd say most are so-so. It's a seasonal change month (if you can call it that here). The sandbars are not set up, but the North Shore has tons of reef breaks, each one having its own best swell direction. If you're looking for Big Big stuff you may have to get lucky, the dip in the jet stream and the storm track is usually not in place by September, but it has happened before. Alot of times both the North and the South shores will have waves, so keep your options open. South swells in September are great because all the kiddies are back in school.

Come to think of it, anytime is a good time to come to Hawai'i nei. Remember, we're in the middle of the Pacific; essentially a swell magnet. Probably not as perfect as Indo, but still challenging and fun.

jfooj is right,

Being in the middle of the Pacific ocean we get swell year round and on all sides of the Island. 8)

September can be fantastic due to the slight season change bringing many light wind days. With these glassy conditions a lot of spots could be good.

We normally see a couple good swells on the North Shore.
Many times swell is going off with good waves on all shores at the same time.

All coasts are saturated with surf spots.
Too many places to list and besides, why ruin an adventure.
With a little snooping around you could stumble onto some of the hidden gems.

But don't expect to see Pipeline going off.
The reefs of that area would most likely be burried in sand causing any swell to mush out with extreme backwash.

It takes a couple huge swells to scower the sand away enough to expose those reefs.

Speaking of huge............ I remember one September 12th I woke up to raging 20' West swell.
No warm up to the winter at all.
It was like, BAM! You want surf...........Here you go, game on.

Buddy I remember that swell very well which I spent the night on a lonely beach stuck on shore after my leash cup broke with my boat outside while my friends drank all the beer on the boat. Who would have known? That was before the whole surf report thing got so good. I remember Ken Bradshaw talking about how no one had been out all summer and had to paddle out to Waimea Bay choking on foam balls.
Summer south swells can get the best in sept some years. But most years can be down right small and uneventful. Greg
