Who Are these Kneelos From 1979?

Post by Headwax. »

Gooday

Well my dad was a keen photog. In the seventies, if he'd knew I'd gone for a wave, he'd often sneak down to Maroubra and film me surfing with his eight mil camera and then drive home without me knowing it.

And the first thing I'd know about his surreptitious activities would be when the film arrived back from Kodak about three weeks later.

Without saying anything he'd drag out the projector screen and set it up in the kitchen doorway, commandeer the kitchen table (green laminex marble pattern with silver art noveau table legs) for his projector, slip the small yellow reel into place, then carefully thread the wispy thin end of the film into the strange mechanical innards so that it clicked and clacked and whizzed while the projector lamp warmed itself up all bee-like subliminal buzz. And all the while Dad would have this strange smile on his face knowing that I didn't have a clue I was about to watch a kneelo surf movie....

So Dad's been gone since '94 and his eight mills films had all but dissapeared into dusty memory .....til the other day when my little brother decided he'd go rummaging for the long lost projector and films and try and convert what he could onto dvd....

And so three days ago history almost repeats itself when I get home from work I find shoved in the letterbox a dvd in a cardboard box. When I crack it open I find the title Andrew Surfing with a kneelo in a barrel printed on the dvd. The kneelo's riding an eight foot barrel, looks like Parkes at Sunset, but just cause it aint me doesn't matter...

The footage contains some interesting stuff

there's a maroubra club meet with film of the Great Glen Perry presiding on the beach with megaphone, one wave by a very young David Parkes looking so smooth and stylish, one with Terry Day ripping..

to give you an idea of the age of the first part I'm riding this (pre leg rope plug board)

Image

The second segment is the last Sitmar Cruises. There's a few incedentals which I found interesting, a few walk on parts.

I know the quality is not good but:

Firstly can anyone tell me which Ware brother this is? It's the chap on the bottom right.

Image

now if this is John Ware am I to assume the above lad is Peter?.

Image

Anyone recognise this spray on the left? (I'm the guy on the right lugging a home made board.)

Image

board from front

why does it remind me of this (obviously not the same board)? from tracks october 1976

Image

Lastly for a litle kneelo history ; Peter Berry's 4wd parked on the boulevard

there's more plus the video if anyone is interested...

PS never heard of Terry Day?

Greg Best is now a politician(Mayor)of gosford city council,

May come in handy one day???

yep

kneelos are coming up in the world

had dinner with a barrister friend the other night for his wife's birthday, we arrive half hour late as normal to find another couple we have never met; chap is very nice about sixty one - and another barrister

anyways this chap has the gift of making people comfortable and bringing them out of themselves, so after a while I am telling him that I surf in the occasuional contest with the local club. He acts interested and says " what do you ride?"

and I think with surprise, here it goes, I have to explain for the thousandth time in my life that 1) I do not dye my hair blonde, and 2) I ride something which is different to most of the western world

So after a puse I take the crunch and say "I ride a kneeboard'"

The barrister, whose name is John, scratches his head, looks up at the grand old ceiling of this posh restauraunt we are eating at and says, without looking back at me....

"Ah yes, I don't suppose you've ever heard of George Greenough..."

Hi Headwax,
love a geek at the dvd sometime,
couldn't for love or money make out any names on the contest board, :? except for best and lentz, Roy/Gecko beat me out of one of those events by .1point out of a 100 point count. The photo of the boulevard with 4WD has chris swinbanks in the foreground, and IMHO it is peter ' the friar' Ware coming out of the water in answer to your first question. Tho' he looks thinner than I remember.
Cheers, Riq :D :D

AWESOME POST!!! :!: :!: :!: :!: :!:

If you ever get a chance to convert that footage to DVD, make sure you put it up on YouTube and link it so we can all enjoy. I'd love to watch.

Very cool to hear old stories

Yes, I second the request to make this old footage available to the rest of us; that stuff is priceless.

Please let me know if I can help in any way.

much obliged for the interest everyone:!:

and the identifying tags Riq. That fellow in the front when he turns around isn't half as pretty as Swinbanks :) :P (Chris ran over my foot in ghis kombi once - I'll never forget his face)

and the offer of help Scott. So far I have downloaded about five different programs trying to get the DVD files into a format that iwndows movie maker can read. Finally I merely changed the extension to mpeg and presto :!: I think I am heading in the right direction

if all goes well, will post it at the end of the week :)

depending on the MB size.

of course The Doors' "The End" is the ideal soundtrack with the ideal length but I am led to believe it is copyright.

cheers

PS Kava don't know those fellows sorry... but I am in Oz

I met Terry Day in Mermaid Beach (gold coast) on a trip in 86 with Mutiny. He had taken up stand up surf. Tom said when they surfed together on his previous trip to oz he ripped!!!!!!! His brother Greg held his own on the pro tour for a few years. Tom had kept in contact for some time . take care,Scott

Headwax -
don't worry about copyright, if the Doors fits use it. Copyright can only get you busted if you're selling the end product.

Well, theoretically there's the file sharing scenario, but if you're just sharing it with two thousand close personal friends ....

Hi Darcy

thanks for the tip :)

An anonymous clue tells me that the "bearded one" in the first picture (John or Peter Ware?) might in fact "be Peter Blom"

cheers :)

Maroubra dreams

Post by ropes »

Headwax.
Just trying to figure out whom you are. I lived in Maroubra for 15 years after moving from NZ in 1987. Loved the Bra. I know Riq and we had some great times on a couple of the pro-ams. John O'Neil, Dave Parkes, Mark Wyper, Cameron Hanes and loads of the Southside Kneeboard club. I live in Ireland now and it was great to see those pictures of the Bra. I would love to see the vid. I am trying to think whom was your dad as I was living there in 94 and remember going to a funeral of a local that year.
I also have loads of video of surfing that I have taken in the Bra. Mostly of the Abbertons, Jamie Reed, Keiran, and loads of others whose names slip from this old head.
Anyway thanks for the memories and say hi to the crew from Ropes in Ireland.

Scott Hayward

Thanks for that info on terry Day. I always wondered what happened to him. Some surfers stop surfing and get fat and old, some go standup surfing (hell I did it for two years :( ) and some keep the faith. :) (Oh yep, some keep surfing and get fat and old  )

Ropes

Well who am I? Umm :) I took up kneeboarding in late 1974 and immediately became one of the faceless crowd. I was about member number eight (I find the little card the other day ! ) in the MKA. In the club contests I never got into the final. I think I never got into the semi finakl. In fact I can't ever remmember getting out of my heat. My only claim to fame was getting through the surfout of the above contest then coming fourth in the semi final. I always tell people I came equal eighth. But I see from tracks I didn't. I guess coming my last in my semi puts me equal 12th :). Now that I think about it. If they were man on man how did I come 4th? I am obviously mixed up and took too much prescription drugs.

Ohyep. My other claim to fame was being run over by David Parkes just in front of the nth maroubra stormwater outlet when we were the only two guys in the water. Or did I run david over?

After an uneventful few years hanging around the Colliseum at Maroubra I was asked to leave Maroubra by the (censored) in 1980. Luckily I had just finished my degree. I went country for four years and used to drive 5 hours to cresecnt on the weekend (occasionally) for two surfs and then drive back. After four years in the country I was run out of town again and accidently landed in Newcastle.

nice to see you and Riq know each other.

cheers
