Fins or flippers? Ever surf a keel-flippered fish or a quad-flippered board? I still remember surfing an 8 foot single flippered mini-mal (shaped by Jim Irons) without a leash at Sunset Beach and Kammy-land back in the day. Oh, I'm sorry... I meant fin.
I'll have to check the back episodes of Sea Hunt to see if Mike Nelson called his flippers fins, or ducks. damn nice boat that lapstreak ulrichsen. considering I bought my first pair of Voits at MacSnyder's Army surplus when I was 7 (fastened my first hand spear from a trident and a broomstick at the same time) by the time i was 8 was expert at catching flounder, but didn't get my first surfboard till I was 12, and didn't mix flippers with surfboards till I was 50, so I figure I can kook out all I want, including donning my flippers on the beach and waddling into the surf quacking like a duck. see here's the confusion... interested surfer sees you getting pitted on a fish and wants to know what kind of fins you have. do you a) slip off your board and flip it over showing him your skegs
or b) lift your feet (wearin swimfins or as some are marketed surf-fins) and flap em in his face?
I always choose "a" cos I'm in denial about wearin fins. I even wrote to Forcefin suggesting "Forceflipper" was sexier and would capture the geezer market for sure considering the old farts are taking up kneeboarding in droves. still waiting for a response though. I figure they're overwhelmed with my brilliance and are re-tooling as we speak.
We (well most of us) as Australians may always differ with words we use here(OZ) compared to there (US) ...
Flippers we put on our feet (if desired) but some prefer not to ... and fins are on our boards, water/surf ski's and other water devices as well as fish, sharks, whales etc
over and out
Tony
Love that "greenroom" feeling...(don't panic I finally found it)..... good ole' winki on a good day
Hey headwax
if wasn't for those flippers you wouldn't have made that one!!!!!!!!...I am impressed.......your balance is unbeleivable......I've done that once......usually per wave......that's usually once per wave......
Sorry not to get back , the editor of Modern Woman saw that shot and she's been at me all morning to do a centre spread ala Mike Purpus..... she keeps ringing and ringing ...... I don't know, ten grand is a lot of money but I don't think I can afford tp pay her magazine that much
Beeline Manta Hydro Fins made in oz, as you can see they have ribs to make them seem muscular and firm. They work pretty well at first but the ribs crack and they lose their firmness as they age (just like my face)
Anthony : was the end of a seequence ... but you are right about the lagg ... happens to me all the time
And Jim... had a surf at Redhead this arvo ... didn't see any fish but there was this big dark shape that kept following me around. I was shitting myslef (myslef is my friend) for a while until I realised it was a big greek guy on a mal
Great shot Headwax!
I'm sure Baden was suprised to win that heat. Most judges are not sophisticated enough to recognise the skill involved in executing a good shore facing arse salute. And I do think the blue flippers help 'frame' the move nicely.
