May be off topic a bit:

Bryn,
Sorry - I exaggerated the thickness (lazy typer!) - it's more like 2.6". The deck is domes out at the edges so the rails are really fine (maybe 1" at 1" in at mid rail). At 23" it's of moderate width. There is a lot of area in the tail (18") and the outline is parallel behind midpoint. It was designed to cover ground fast, get to the lip fast and to travel out onto the flat and then come back fast and smooth.

I kind of overdid the fast at the cost of looseness.

(note this pic doesn't show the swallow tail)

It goes sensationally well in glassy conditions, is highly responsive and a pleasure to surf. But it's a handful in wind chop, with the rails catching the chop.
The outline of the board make it better in walled up, barrelly stuff. If it's sucking clean then the rail thickness feels great. Tube rides are totally controlled.

My thoughts:
Keep a bit the volume in the center line so you can catch waves. This board volume is ~40 liters - the same as all my boards regardless of length, so it paddles well.
Once you're up and riding then center line thickness has little effect. If you want to make it feel thinner, reduce the rail thickness. Overall I'm staying with slightly puffier rails (1.75" at 1" in at mid rail) because I think they handle average surf conditions better. And average surf is what I get most of the time. I'm hanging the board on the wall until I get to Indo again (or maybe the Gold Coast).

Parkes Bonzer Tri

Just saw this baord too - and considering my situation it might be exactly the board for me! This is me at present;

1. 80kgs and not in shape, not surf fit but not a lardy pie man.

2. Young family + living in london = very few opportunities to surf.

3. Not and never was, interested in contests, what other people thought of my surfing, or conforming to the herd (none of us are right??) It matters to me that I surf well, but showing off is not for me.

4. Watched far too many 70s surf movies in the 1980s - and liked them - I like cruising and big lazy wide cutbacks. "Air"..thats what you breathe right?. Or put in the tyres of your car.

5. Prefer 2 foot surf with 2 guys out at Europie to 5 foot barrels and 200 out at Croyde.

I'm working out the exchange rate as we speak....unless Bryn you can give me a local alternative mate????

Scott the Aussie in London.
all the best,

Scotty

Have my money - now looking for a board. :D I must really check out as many as possible and have 100% resolved to be open minded. I might have ridden a tri for 20 years...but who is to say what will suit me now?
all the best,

O.k., I must be missing a link here, but who is Dave? I am in the market for a new board after pulling out my trusty Robert August that's been idle for over two decades easy. I weigh much more and my old babay just doesn't work for my girth anymore. Anyone ? Who's Dave? Thanks.

I believe the "Dave" that your asking about would be none other than Dave Parkes - Australian board shaper (excellent shaper & surfer) located in Byron Bay northern NSW. I understand that Don the adminstrator could tell you more regarding seeing the type of boards he makes.
