No worries Ska - got Orange St with Jimputz this am. He had better wave karma than I but I still got some great ones. Really a fun session.

camping

Post by matt cunningham »

Camped in South Carlsbad with the midgets and friends last three days. i thought of my three hundred closest friends at the end of the road as I surfed 6-8 foot peaks solo (Eat your heart out orange kneeboarder/randy) at a reef for three hours......

Surfed with a buddy there yesterday who said to call Jack B. the old one (something from college eh Mr. Count?).

Anybody up for Calafia Wed? I will be there, drop me a p.m or give me call.
Randy????????

Too bad you missed Black's-8-10' faces, a couple of doh waves, under 15 out on the whole beach. Check the photos I just posted.

Post by alfredo zavala »

WOW

I HAD A LOAD OF FAMILY HERE SO HAD TO DO THE RIGHT THING.
WAS DOWN AT THE BEACH WITH MY CREW AND WAS AGONY SEEING THE SURF PRETTY GOOD AND NOT BEING ABLE TO GET OUT!!

I'M HAVING A HARD TIME OF IT!!
WINDS BEEN COMING UP REALLY STRONG UP HERE IN THE PM'S SO I HAVEN'T GOT ANY SURF IN 2 WEEKS. BUT I'M STOKED SO MANY OF YOU HAVE - SO I'M REJOICING WITH THOSE WHO REJOICE! Y'ALL SHOULD READ MARKS' SHORT STORY OF THE INCREDIBLE DAY HE HAD!!
I'M HOPING TO GET SOME OF THE SOUTH @ MY FAVORITE SPOT UP HERE THIS COMING WEEK. I HOPE IT PANS OUT, ITS A SUMMER SPOT. CAN ONLY MAKE IT AFTER WORK SO HOPING FOR THE WIND TO CALM DOWN BUT THE REPORTS AREN'T LOOKING TOO FAVORABLE.THATS SPRING ON THE CENTRAL COAST.
IT WAS GREAT TO HANG WITH MY 89 YR OLD POP,WINE TASTING IN MY GLORIOUS BACK YARD, AND SO WORTH THE TIME OUT OF THE WATER.
HAPPY EASTER. . . HE IS RISEN

Santa Cruz was big today! 10', 19 sec. swell, mix of NW and SW. Phil Curtis, Dion and myself at big Swift Street. Don't know how big the faces were on the sets, but definitely DOH. Glassy, glassy, glassy for much of the morning. The takeoff was all the way in front of Stockton Avenue, then firing across the main Swift reef, which was in full racetrack mode. Only a handful of guys out, so the vibe was encouraging. I survived my best freefall of the winter on one set early on; now my confidence was high. My last wave, however, was the second wave of a thick set way out the back. Phil missed in and called me to go (you don't say no to Phil!). I felt in just the right spot, too. It turned into a freefall I had no way of landing and the worst wipeout of the winter (you know the kind: first you fall deep into the pit, then feel yourself sucked back up into heart of the beast, then slammed down over the falls, hard, the kind where you figure the reef must be shallow there because of the violence of the slam. Then the hold down continues much longer than you're comfortable withi, and the leash gets wrapped around your ankles making it impossible to kick to the surface. After sputtering to the top, gasping for air and seeing that your board is in one piece, you turn around to get further worked by four more waves just grinding up on the reef behind the first one, each one wanting to rip your arms off. Somehow no injuries, no snapped leash (brand new!) and no dents in my body. Grateful.

But pretty cool to have the worst wipeout of the season in mid-April!

Late drop at Stockton?? I think I was there for one of those once.. this time must have been about triple the size though.. (?) Glad to hear you got some good ones and made it in with no scrapes! If Santa Cruz was that big and glassy, how much bigger (and better?) do you think it was up north??
With all memory and fate driven deep beneath the waves, Let me forget about today until tomorrow.

Fun up here yesterday. This place is protected from NW winds,but..the swells have to hump around p.reyes ,and then hump around ducksbury reef,by that time they've lost most of the size.
SE winds most of the day, outgoing tide[estuary]didn't help.
All that changed around 5pm.Glassed off and broke till dark.Solid head +sets, nice long lefts. The crowd  When all else fails everyone comes here..
Today the swell dropped, and the wind is whipping sideshore,One more check about 6...who knows!

cheers

Lake Superior Open Water Forecast

Post by cs »

I'm feeling a bit sick, so I may not be at work long tomorrow... This is the open water forecast. Inshore will be much smaller. Head high maybe at the regular spots, and the fun stuff will only last a couple of hours. Hopefully, I'll score one of the rare good sessions. Once the wind turns NW, we'll get an hour or two of offshore goodness, then it'll be gone, heading off to Canada. Still pretty chilly up here but worth the drive if I can grab a wave or two, and like the old country song says, "I got a heater in my truck...". If enough people think happy thoughts, maybe the forecast will hold.
