Dorje,
I've got David's big glass template fins in the thruster which makes it a very drivey board so putting this up against the quad fins forward is probably getting close to the reason for the turning difference. If I surf the quad like the thruster it will tail slide. So from this I deduce that you can get away with a more upright posture on the thruster than you can on the quad. You can surf upright on a Parkes quad but don't expect the performance that the board was designed for. With the thruster I've got those big side fins and tail fin to use my weight against (love those carving bottom turns).

Having said all this it's fine to compare in perfect conditions. I need to work on my consistency in the less favourable stuff.

Hi wax

how do?

emailed dp recently about fins and he suggested for winter waves and drive on my 5.10 I could put larger set in the back - ive got GR at front and GX AT back

he also said he was trying to use the fibre glass FG 700 range at this time - light and good template - HIS CUSTOM GLAss fin maker not making at this time

i down loaded all that fcs catalogue info and been in a head spin of possibility since - though the fibre glass seems the allround go

cheers

It took so long to click through to get to this page, and it's only a bump. Can someone delete off the several useless pages with nothing on them?

Heh

It's a great subject. worth finding. I'll make a thread linking to lost threads. Like flashpoint thread.

My input to this thread. Flex in the front fins of a quad. None in the back fins.

20 interesting statements quad vs tri

Post by mark ricketts »

what a mission - drop off for a bit and then be faced with that marathon - where's my medal?

anyway - it blows me out that we keep making such definitive statements about what works. my boards are all very different and require different styles - fucks with my head but it spices up your surfing, unless its big and gnarley and then a bit of predictability is nice.

lately i just hoped off my Parkes quad for my 10yr old Outer island flex five fin for smaller clean waves and am having a ball. better board - nup! just different and better suited to the between season surf we've got at the moment.

once the big winter swells hit, i'll be back on my super predictable flashie or the somewhat more twitchy DP quad.

i've got a parkes quad with a fifth fin position and didn't like it as much as a tri - not surprising as DP designed it as a quad and i wanted some insurance as it was my first. i'm sure with some judicious fin choice and some style tweaks i could make it work as well. i can hear hart say ' you shouldn't have to" - dead right but nothing like making you think about your surfing due to some unexpected behaviour.

otherwise i get lazy and just use instinct.

still, it is the pacific and lazy works fine...hmmmmmm

Nice points Mark.
nothing like making you think about your surfing due to some unexpected behaviour.

Keep changing your equipment and you won't get jaded....

You might fall of more though :)

I made a roundabout link to here.

viewtopic.php?p=52455#52455

If you post in this thread and want someone to find it, you might like to post on the other thread as well. That way someone will read your post.

Then again it could be misconstrued as 'bumping:"

cheers

good waves here today, small but kind.

theres a few around here if you poke a stick at, others seem to think you've shot Bambi

then there are those who feel there word is final

then theres you 8)

good to "wax Lyrical" again...will post this elsewhere as well.

3 boards these days...all second hand, all gold...2 quads and a thruster

new quad is a 6'4 from Neil Luke and its such a buzz to the collection and the thought process come what to pull out of the car time.

quads do go vertical...even at 6'4

great run of waves over the last 6 weeks and more comming

spending much time learning to play the djembe as apart of my african art programme at school...kids love drums...old dogs can learn new tricks it seems...art teacher, soon drum teacher (basic at first   )

quads v tris...more to do with board shape i think these days...im thinking of the Rolling Stones "some girls" cover...all those brah styles are just possibilities to the basic shape of the owner of the breasts

cheers

About the quads, something I never really noticed until Baden was explaining his board to me. His fins are set close together (lead and trailers)so the water bounces off one set into the rear fins making a sort of venturi effect if I am correct.
This is me with Baden's board. album_showpage.php?pic_id=14351

The trailer fins on my quad are further apart from the main fins.
