North south combo

Post by mike schmaeling »

Yesterday morning I could see the swell lines converging, fun south here the last two days. Then, at around 11 am, the north kicked in, big time. It's been beautiful, windless weather. Jalama at it's finest!

Surf report

Post by khoningford »

Solid 3 to 5' with bigger sets out of the SW @ 56th today, with MaxB putting on a tube-riding clinic on the set waves. A fairly decent group of kneemen out, so many that with one well-known individual from the 70's surf/skate era saying that it "reminded him of the good old days, except with a lot less hair!" Headed either north or south in search bigger game tomorrow...

Classic Fall morning in San Diego. HH+ offshore groomed peaks at Blacks. A bit soft on the outside but hollow on the inside. Orange kneeboarder and Jack making it look better than it was 8)

which reminded me that for me "tomorrow" is a repeat of today. 32degrees C by 9:30AM, and that was outside the tin shed where I'm working on a 60 odd foot game boat. It's a new build. Today was spent getting the deck ready for non-skid paint; setting out and checking the masking, final detail filling and sanding, cleaning, cleaning and more cleaning. Yesterday the shipwrights glued the teak cockpit sole panels in. Prior to doing this they ground the vinyl ester laminate it's being vacuum-bagged to, which filled the whole shed with airborne itching powder. In the afternoon somebody else was grinding the two 4.5 metre engine-room vent panels for more lamination directly under the foredeck where I was working. Gold Coast has had early morning waves but with an early start at work I can't make it. Onshores kick in by 9:00AM and last until after dark. I feel like I need to attend maxb's clinic.
Oh well ... at least I'm working. Roll on Christmas break.

khoningford, southpeak and the rest of you layabouts ... enjoy yourselves ... and spare a thought for a dusty brother down under.

This just made national/world news.

As for me, I haven't seen the sun in over a week. :(

The photo they left out of the sequence in the Mail coverage. Where they quoted Kerby as saying "...I went over the lip..." they omitted one small word that makes a heap of difference; "with".
Only a surfer knows the feeling, eh?

Seems like an important moment to have included. I found the story written kind of funny also. I feel like an insider reading an outsiders take on it.

Santa Cruz suffered some strong winds Sunday by late morning, and a lot of guys stayed out of the water, writing it off as a sub-mediocre day, even though the good spots were running 6-8' faces. By the time I got there in the mid afternoon, it was beginning to glass off and shape up. Only about 8 guys out at Swifties, and they were spread around pretty well. I got lots of waves (though I surfed like crap at the beginning, but then got it together). Finally, most of the guys paddled in leaving just 3 of us as it glassed off further and got more hollow for the last hour or so. I sat alone on the outside and picked off the overhead set waves for 200 yard rides with only the company of a few otters. Surfed like that 'til it was about dark. Only could have been better if I had a few kneelo buddies with which to share it!
I'm not influenced by the past; I change it!

scored 6-8' hb pier last night.....super shreddable NS with 2 amigos and my little brother....

traded flashpoints with my friend for a few waves....we split a sick peak and i get a boxy left barrel ....he gets hit with the lip and the leash fails :x

my competition board goes flying through the pilings and dissapears into the darkness on SS!

....my friend and i are FREAKING! we both go running up the beach like 6 lifeguard towers before i spot the board floating in no mans land between the outside and the shorey...

when i get it under the pier lights were both amazed! NO dings! No scratches! :D :D :D :P

we paddle back out for another hour and continue scoring!
