c'mon...i know you San Diego guys get over to the islands. are you saying you never-ever put on a legrope? even here? because i see very few if any guys surfing waves of consequence (on whatever type of vehicle) without one. another thing. if you went out leashless and you lost your board and it happened to hit someone.....especially a local someone.....chances are your board would not be the only thing copping a beating
i'm just sayin

Mike, there aren't really any waves of consequence here, with the exception of rare days. C'mon Rooster... tell him the truth...

I think I average one every 6 months. I took two to Indo and broke one on Day 2. Shorter is better, less drag in the water...

Randy,
i got this stout 6' one that i have been using exclusively. i put on my 6'4" F2K yesterday. did'nt need the big board because it was only 4-5' but i need to make some adjustments in technique to ride it and did'nt want to do that at 6-8' 69's
you have to really sit on the button to catch the wave at this particular spot so getting caught inside is a definite. i almost never ditch my board mostly because the outcome is almost always better even if it's ripped from my death grip. i do ditch though. no shame. when that 10 footer from hell catches you it's like a submarine war movie...."DIVE DIVE DIVE
anyway i did get caught several times by some doubling up 12+ face waves that ripped the board from my hands easily but the board came right back but never shot at me. never a "my 8' leash is now 20' long and my board is tombstoning" moment. i'm sold on shorter leashes. in fact i was thinking of some local guys who handline for large pelagics like ahi and ono and they have braided power pro kind of line with a rubber snubber attachment. kind of like way back when Glen Winton used a piece of poly rope for a cord. but slightly more forgiving.
i have never ever noticed the drag of a surf leash....i'm too fat and insensitive to such trivial matters

Most of the waves in SD are quite forgiving and you could go ropeless. I started surfing long before cords and held out for a long time. I think they make you lazy, but if you are at a rocky spot then its' a no brainer.

Most people use cords because they don't want to swim, but that was a part of surfing and it made you a stronger surfer. Before cords the guys that got the most waves were the ones that didn't fall as often, either you learned to be a good surfer or a strong swimmer, now guys waste waves trying stuff they would never think about if there were consequences.

Randy even though Rito is a sand beach I'm glad to use a cord, WHO the hell wants to do that initial paddle out through the inside crap more than once  :!:

Rooster,
i agree totally on the concept of going leashless and your statement about kids wasting waves because of no consequence is dead on.
i have never let my daughter use a leash on her boogieboard. she had to learn the basics of how to surf....the right way 8) most of the time she's the only kid at Hapuna without one and she almost never loses her board. she'd never have had a reason to count and time sets or learn how to go under a wave if she had that safety line. will she eventually want one? of course
will i say no? of course not. i'm incapable of saying no to her in the first place  but once she gets it (basics of surfing) then she should enjoy the extra freedom and security they provide.
8) 8)

Mike,

That sounds great, that is the proper way to learn :!: Timing the sets, seeing a rip appear and knowing how to use it, learning to body surf ALL the way to your board to retrieve it, those are the important tricks, not popping an air into the soup.

I see a lot of clueless young guys that just don't get it because everything has been handed to them all their lives, they never had to earn anything. When I was starting you had to earn your place in the line up, and the older guys, ( 16 and up ) made sure you had respect, or they would install it for you

As far as not being able to say no to the daughter :?: Mines 20 and still has me wrapped around her finger

we get lots of rain, earthquakes, volcanos spewing death and destruction here on the Big Isle. the Oahu guys get a few sprinkles that shut down their Starbucks for a day or two and they clamor for Federal aid.
blame them
i like the murky water. i think the sharks can't see as good

(disclaimer: just joking...lots of folks got hammered in that last storm. condolences to them)
i heard fooj had to brew his own coffee for a day or two and is now making a heartfelt youtube documentary on the whole ordeal.

LOL yeah, Oahu seems to think they are the center of the universe

While Ilived there I always got excited when they would send me to the Big Isle for work, more laid back, and most everyone was friendly, but there are always the few assholes.

Rooster - Rito shorebreak, Baja Malibu and of course Blacks too can dish it out, but I was thinking of Calafia. Talk about waves of consequence
I'll never forget watching Gove get dragged underwater by that wave 50 yards    and laughing from the safety of the cliff 8)

Randy

Hell yes Calafia, that was one I was referring to, G man decided to " SHARE " one with me one day with him in front of course, , well as he stalled for the barrel at the first spine, sticking me in the pit, even WITH a leash, I came up with 2 halves :!: :!:

How about Salssupuedes, That is the worst place I know of for getting in and out of the water, Makes Klaff look like the Shores :!:

I you wanna resurrect an over stretched leggy just chuck it into some hot water . You can watch it shrink back to its original shape .

Merry Xmas to all

FWIW... typically use 8' and as thick as I can get.

Cons: It does create drag, and SR is spot on with tombstoning.

OBSF: No rocks, but best to keep the paddle out to 1x/session.

I try to keep a spare in the car.

BTW, I don't know how Judith bodysurfs this. When the need to swim in happens, it's HARD to catch these bodysurfing. Heck, it's hard to chase them down with our equipment. Maybe it's like bodysurfing Sunset with the big, open field?
