Another outstanding champ from a sport with a hugely variable environment is windsurfer Bjoern Dunkerbeck. 12 overall world titles from 1988 to 1999 which is a combination of waves and racing, over 100 individual world cup event wins, freestyle champ in 1998 plus was the holder for the world speed record over a nautical mile and the outright speed record for open water!! Talk about diversity and well rounded skills! He's just won the last two world cup slalom rounds this year too, 20 years after his first overall title win, amazing! Would pretty much be the equivalent of Kelly winning the longboarding, bodyboarding and kneeboarding every year as well as towing in to the biggest waves of the winter!

Bizarre quote from Randy Rarick, ASP surf contest organizer, after Kelly Slater's win last week at the Pipeline Master's:
Hopefully, one day Slater will indeed become a complete surfer...I'd throw a challenge [Slater's] way to come and win Sunset. You're not -- in my opinion -- a complete surfer until you win at Sunset. He's won Pipe. He's won the Eddie. Come prove yourself completely and win an event at Sunset.
I'm not influenced by the past; I change it!

Stanley Matthews. Didn't win much due to playing a team sport and unfortunately for him, playing when talent was spread around a bit. Anyway, from Wikipixiedick:
Sir Stanley Matthews, CBE (1 February 1915 — 23 February 2000) was an English football player. Often regarded as one of the greats of the English game, he was the first footballer to be knighted (and is, as of 2008, the only player to have been knighted while still playing), as well as the first European Footballer of the Year and the first Football Writers' Association Footballer of the Year. Gaining the nicknames The Wizard of the Dribble and The Magician, Matthews retains his reputation as one of the finest dribblers of the ball in the history of association football. A teetotaller he kept fit enough to play at the top level until he was 50 years old, the oldest player ever to play in England's top football division, and did not play his final competitive game until 1970, when he was playing in Malta. Matthews was also an inaugural inductee to the English Football Hall of Fame in 2002 to honour his contribution to the English game. [1]

Yahoo News picked up this story today from Grind TV. Asking if Slater is the best athlete ever, and getting no serious argument denying the question. I can personally vouch for the second paragraph. It's a sad day indeed when an athlete can get passed by like this, and he's even American. Perhaps he's too clean of an athlete?

What a great article, Mike--thanks for posting! I thought the last paragraph was a great way to close it off. I love watching the contests live on the web now. When Slater gets a heat, I try to drop everything to watch it. I used to do the same on weekends when the Chicago Bulls were on TV and Air Jordan was dominating...

Sure Scott, I knew there would be some interest in this article.
Riq, interesting you mentioned Ali, and I agree he is a good pick, kinda odd the article would mention George Foreman instead.
I don't know Foreman's record though, but maybe it's not a boxer because they only fight once, maybe twice a year?
