I've got an Xcel 5/4 winter suit - I'd highly recommend it - the only problem I have with it is I struggle to get out of it!

Go top of the line.A bit more expensive but will go the extra miles.I wear x-cel,Simply because they fit me the best.So...Try them all,as sizes vary depending on manufacturer.

5/4 oneil mutant ...hood or no hood...no back zip....insane flex....

Went with an O'Neill 5/3 Heat this year with hood. It comes with a traditional vertical back zipper & has proven to be a solid suit......and easy to get in/out.

Water temp here today is 34F, air 29F. Most guys here swear by Xcel and use the 5/4. I just got one and they are very easy to put on, taking it off is a bit harder. I find it very strechy and comfy.

Go Lable/Price blind and figure out what fits you best.

My Body Glove 5/4/3 VAPOR was insane in Canada... I was never cold. Not even in the snow.
Never even worn the suit in california.
But the Large Tall fits me perfect.

Used to wear an O'neill Heat 4/3, it was a good warm suit that lasted two seasons.

Now bought the O'neill Mutant 4/3 and would never go back to "zipper" suits. The new zipper-less technology is a bit warmer(primarily from stopping any cold water flushes from the neck) and is a lot more flexible/comfortable.

Getting out can be more difficult with a zipper-less but once you get used to it its not bad. Just need to get an elbow past the neck while taking it off.

one thing i have noticed with the mutant VS the heat is that, my heat after 3 years is still a 4/3 ....

my 1 year old 4/3 mutant is now 1.5mil to straight up lycra at the high stress points...


tried on a bunch of other suits this year but ended up getting another mutant , but in 5/4 ..


I would rather trunk it at rincon then put on my old Heat...

Went with the Heat 5/3 because it was a freebie...and O'Neill suits have always fit me well.

I also wear an Xcel hooded 5/4. very warm and stretchy...but as others have said go blind and find the best fit as all the top line suits are good now. I wear Xcel as they fit me very well although the new suits do not last nearly as long as the old ones.

Really love the 4/3 O'Neill Psycho ll, but they do make a 4.5/3.5 superfreak that is a little warmer but not a flexable.

I've been using the xcel 5/4 for a couple years now and I'm very happy with it. Built in hood and small front zip = no flushing down your back on duck dives. I will never have a back zip suit again.

Mahalo, for all the replies! I wear a rip curl 4/3 love the suit but hate the snaps that hold the hood/neck thingy. I would love a 5/4 with the detatchable hood but am afraid of snaps, mabey a slip on hood?

I have this years Rip Curl 5/4 nice suit but not as warm as my X-cel from last year
the Rip Curl my Arms and legs get cold after along session and kneepads are not so good for kneelos

X-Cel best cold water suit I have ever worn

5/4/3 I own Rip Curl , Body Glove fell apart after one year, Quiksilver Cell ok but rides up your rear end, Billabong Gold warm but like the Rip Curl arm and legs get cold, Hotline the zip acrossed the chest one warm but not flexable and my X-Cells two of them warm and felxable
