Mr Kidrock please be hereby enlightened.

Fins provide stability and direction, and are found on top of a fish or sea based mammal such as a dolphin and also on the bottom of a kneeboard. They do not provide propulsion.

Flippers on the other hand are used for propulsion and direction and are used by dolphins who may or may not also be called Flipper. This is where we get the name of the things we stick on our feet which we use for, yes you guessed it, propulsion and direction.

And that is the end of the lesson.

  Bloody flippers, been trying without them the last 1/2 doz sessions or so and had my eyes   opened as far as to what extent I have come to rely on them ( it's like learning all over again)  ......but Oh the difference, when I finally get myself onto a wave :D :D , I knew that they create drag, but the amount of freedom and control I gain has me trying again and again so as to get some upper body strength to do it full time 8) 8) won't be competing without them for now.... if only that bloody dolphin would come and drag me along with his dorsal fin... er flipper.....errr fin...thingy

Cheers Wolruss

I find the same thing when I go ****less. Thinking a compromise by using a smaller and softer ***** and taking some of the stress off my injured ankle.

Hey Quadfin,

The Perfect Remedy? The old green Churchills...probably the perfect fin for Gulf surf and injured ankles.

Churchill would probably make a goldmine if they started making those things again. What the heck are they thinking?

I recommend trying lots of different flippers. I have been cutting mine very short AND grinding off the ridges on top so as to have the best feeling thru my flippers when wave riding. I'm very willing to give up thurst for better board/top of foot contact. I use flippers with the softest upper I can find, then cut the blade short, grind off all the top of foot ridges. Totally custom and the best sensitivity in the tail/top of foot area I've ever had.

If I was a real stud I would ditch the flipers and surf flipperless like Simon, Albert, the Simpsons, and Gavin!!

Ever since I've moved to a 6'0" KB, I only use arm paddling to catch a wave and I use my swim fins for kicking back out to the line up, giving my arms a rest.

True on the Hot Buttered. I've been wearing mine exclusively this
past year since getting back into the water after breaking my right fibula
in May 08. The smaller blades put less strain on the newly healed bone.

I'd still rather get by with a pair of swim fins and be able to surf shorter
boards with less volume than go the other way need more foam/length to
compensate.

It all boils down to whatever blows your skirt up I guess.
