Mike Fernandez wrote:No parking at Montauk in the summer gentlemen, bummer  The swell should hit Rockaway straight on, so no current, and the swell is dropping as we speak it looks like, so it might be good a little smaller than triple overhead. The call if it stays giant is Manasquan, it can hold it, plus has the long jetty for the current. OCMD, and those beaches facing east should have massive currents especially if the swell has a lot of south in it.
Mike, I see your logic now. I have also heard Manasquan will hold a swell pretty well (and have seen some video of winter storms to back it up). Wherever you go, take some pics, with or without kneelos!

Hurricane Bill forces city to close beaches in Queens, Brooklyn and Staten Island

Officials were forced to close Coney Island beach -- and several others -- due Hurricane Bill (below) in the Atlantic.

The city is closing beaches in Queens, Brooklyn and Staten Island on Friday because of fears that Hurricane Bill will pound the shores with dangerous surf.
No one will be allowed to enter the waters off of Rockaway Beach, Coney Island Beach, Manhattan Beach, South Beach, Midland Beach and Wolfe's Pond Beach, officials said.
"As weather conditions are changing quickly, it is essential that people not enter the water at closed beaches," Parks Department Commissioner Adrian Benepe said.
The Category 3 hurricane, expected to lash Bermuda on Friday afternoon, is already producing giant swells along the East Coast, officials said.
Although an official decision has not yet been made, the beaches will likely remain closed through the weekend.
Forecasters say the core of the storm is likely to pass over the waters between Bermuda and the East Coast Saturday, triggering 20-foot waves, rip currents and coastal flooding.
"We have a storm hitting Bermuda, and that will create big waves, big currents, dangerous conditions along the Jersey coast and the Long Island coast and the ocean side," Mayor Bloomberg said on his morning radio show.
City beaches have already seen their share of tragedies this summer.
Seven people have drowned since June, including six who lost their lives in the treacherous waters off the Rockaways.

I am pretty sure OC,MD will be flooded, and unridable do to current and wind, so Manasquan is the only place I can think of. :?

I have been doing a lot of research, and everyone is talking about closeouts here on the east side. Maybe Hatteras is different, too far though for me. I'll be at Manasquan checking it on Sunday, hopefully it will be ridable on Monday.
All I keep reading about are 20 footers with huge chop, and current. If only we had some rock reefs around here. :(

The hype is starting to wear thin. I've seen several storms of this magnitude take this track - rarely DOH (if that) and the swell dies amazing quickly after the storm passes and you're out of the NE swell window. Sux to see beaches being closed to ALL when we wait months for swell around here.
Hope we can find somewhere worth the long trip!

Friday we had a nice little warmup session witha chest/shoulder swell that ana gave us before she died.
Today (Saturday) started out nice with a 14 second head high swell and grew to a couple of feet overhead by dinnertime and stayed very surfable all day with little current and a 10-20mph SW cross chop.
I expect it will be too big tomorrow to get outside, but who knows.
Sunday it's suppose to back off to headhigh+ with a light west wind.
So far so good.

Long-awaited, super-hyped Bill came to CenFL yesterday. It was OH and beautiful conditions but not the 8-10 or 10-12 everyone was expecting. This shot was from the morning. As the tide dropped in the pm the rights started to just reel. With the SE angle @ 17-secs., the whole coast was a point break. The blue water and offshores made for one of those classic surfing moments.

Eric Carson surfed south of us at his mysto spot, a rare reef break, a secret jealously guarded by him and his fellow lifeguards.

I bumped it an old man (prob younger than me) who was surprised to see a kneerider out there. His name was Butch and he said he kb'd Santa Cruz from 70-80, if any of you knew him. He moved out here and ended up building a home on the sand. His favorite spots were Lane, 4-mi, and Waddell.

I hope the OBX crew and Fernandez & co. all scored and are still scoring today.

"Giant" east coast swells in US making news in Australia!!

Sydney Morning Herald news report here: http://www.smh.com.au/world/hunt-for-sp ... -evew.html

Check ou the video - truly terrifying waves ....

Reminds me of the time I flew into LA knowing that a a big storm had been tracking north of Hawaii headed for the mainland west coast. Arrived into LA and people at LAX were talking about "giant surf", on the way down to Newport listening to the radio they were issueing "high surf" warnings, so much hype. Got to Newport and checked into the good old (long lamented) Little Inn On The Bay and hot footed it around to the Wedge to see big crowds lining the beach. Excitement plus!! Sadly it was 4 to 5 foot ... that was it! The power of media hype!

That said the photos above a pretty darn sweet!

Fun leftovers in DE and MD yesterday. Clean, light offshore and HH in the AM, mostly closeouts where I surfed in DE, but you could find an edge before the tide and wind go to it. Went down to OC in the evening to meet up with MikeF, surf had decent size, water was very warm, but a hard south wind shifting peaks faster than I could paddle. More size here on Sat but we heard the wind was on it all day.

OC,MD wasn't too bad on Sunday, about 1 maybe 2ft over head on the sets, certainly not triple overhead as was called for    Kinda peaky, no current.
A little bumpy today, but fun. Had one tube Sunday made me think I was at Rocky Point. WOW, those Florida waves are amazing! I am drooling :!:

True Tony, although the West Coast (Cali) does get big. Here where I am, those waves are sadly considered big. The only good thing in that video was the woman in the pink bikini.
