I think I just found the wording for the next year's tee shirt....

  • patly because we're an endangered species,
partly because we DON'T care about mainstream fashion,
mostly because you can go to any hidden, inaccessible spot on the planet and, when the waves start firing, some grizzled kneeboarder pops out of the undergrowth and rides it like it's their back yard.

I meant to post something about this last Summer.

I was walking through Alphabet City (East Village) in NYC at 3am on a Saturday night last August, when from out of a super crowded noisy bar I hear:
"KNEEBOARDERS SUCK!"

I'm like, WTF- Are you kidding me , when tumbling out of the bar comes Joel Tudor. Joel and I spent some time surfing together on the North Shore a few years back, and he really dug Kneeboarding. Loved my boards... how fast they were... how low my center of gravity was.
He was super fired up on his Mag piece and getting a Kneelo Photo published.

It has nothing to do with "mainstream" or "throwback" or anything of the sort...
Joel Tudor just likes kneeboards and thinks we're cool.

Hey Ed, that's awesome... small world, eh?

I was at Blacks one fall day when I was just back from the east coast ('05). There was a guy in the water (standup) )that was surfing a crazy tie-dyed retro fish and he was ripping on it - surfing circles around everyone else that day. I had no idea who he was.

I got out of the water at the end of my session when the same guy approached me on the beach and starting asking me a ton of questions about my board and kneeboarding in general. It was Joel, and he was clearly stoked on kneeboarding.

I get questions every now and then from standup surfers, but rarely with that level of interest. I could care less who he was, it was pretty cool to have a conversation about kneeboarding with someone who wasn't one of my "fellow travelers".

I've always observed that it's the less talented standup surfers in the water that are obnoxious and mouthy about kneeboarding.

I think Red pretty much sums it up!

My take on it: Kneeboarding= Roots= 1%er
The other 99% don't matter!

Stoked to hear that, he's always said 'ride everything' but I always wondered whether he was including kneeboards in that statement.
I'd love to see him surf a kneeboard - if he's so interested why can't we (ie; someone who knows him, like eq) hook him up with a proper kneeboard ?
Then of course, Machado will want to try it 8) and Rasta 8) etc., etc :D

i saw the photos in surfer, i thought they could have used a more recent shot as well..... it is classic rex. no need to panic, a cover shot is a long way off! lots of my old surfer mags had cool kneeboard shots with lame captions.............

Did Joel mention anything about Greg Little? Joel and his brother Josh lived down the street from Greg when we were groms. Greg was the first guy to take him down to Blacks and make him ride hollow waves. That was a long time ago. Joel still comes down the hill from time to time but only surfs south peak. You can get away with burning more people down there than north peak so it suits his style.

EXACTLY.
"So if you want to kneeboard, find the hollowest waves you can, ride as short of a board as possible and go fast and deep. If you want to slip and slide, twist and jerk, go for air then stand up and do it. Let’s keep kneeboarding sacred."

Joel Tudor is a immensely talented surfer, who can, and does, surf just about anything.

He can surf circles around most of the guys in this forum, and put him a kneeboard, I bet he could do that too.

I guess it's just not cool to admire someone with talent. :?:
