How wide is too wide?

Surfing at Ohope beach yesterday and bumped into a kneelo I hadn't seen in the area before. Got talking about boards and found out he is the process of designing his next board.

6'2" and 29" wide. My jaw just dropped at that point. I cant imagine anything that wide and explained I hadn't heard of anyone riding one. He said he had a 27" wide board some time back that was really good for getting through the flat sections at his local and wanted to do the same here.

I guess experimentation is the name of the game

He's about 6' and 85kg.

Any comments welcome ( I'm sure they'll be interesting)

Sounds like fun.
As a high performance vehicle or barrel bullet, sure some obvious drawbacks.

Try to get him to take pictures of the end product.

My mate Garret Mac Namarra and others surf SUPs at huge Pipeline on occasion.
They get pitted on beasts of a boards.

Try one that is about 4'10" x 29" and thick, kinda like those formula boards they use in windsurfing, tiny, wide, and thick, they use huge sails.

I tried a board like the one cake is talking about up at the ranch with big tony, the surf was small but on a wave with a shoulder and some length of ride the board was surprisingly fun. cruisey and fast.
The twin fins were way back at the tail and glassed in near the rails kinda like a simmons twin fin. really fun
not an everyday board but definetly a great time

Hahaha, that's a good one. Reminds me of the time I was a young grom at Black's, great day about 4'-5', just came out of a great barrel and went to shore.

As I took off my fins (no leash), an old man strode up to me and exclaimed, "That was a very nice slide, young man".

Later introduced himself to me as "Doc Paskowitz".

First kneeboard I had misfortune to try out was double-stringer 5'7" x 26" x 3?" -- huge thing that surfed like a plate and was impossible to duckdive. Jon Mel at Freeline in SC said it was the widest kneeboard he'd ever seen. It was made by the Froghouse sometime in the 80's. I'm a big girl, but board was too wide for me to paddle. Must have been made for a 400 lb sumo wrestler! It had a super-heavy glass job and weighed a ton. Needless to say, I didn't rip on that thing -- it just about put me off kneesurfing altogether.

I remember a guy that surfed PB Point, this would have been back in 86-87, he shaped his own kneeboards and built them at 26 or 27 inches wide (the lenghts varied & they had square tails if I remember correctly), he ripped at that spot and just glided across those flat sections, I'd say there's a place for these types of boards....

if he was gliding through a lot of flat sections at PB Point, he must've been doing a lot of gliding.
