Ocean Safety has installed a permanent PA system at Sandy's. It is directed toward the shorebreak but anybody in the water can pretty much hear it. They make hourly and spot announcements on how dangerous it is and how it is for experts only and how it has the highest spinal cord injuries of any beach in the universe. Pretty funny to hear when it is 2 feet. I mentioned it to one of the main lifeguards and he said that the small days are when the most people get hurt. He's right. Maybe somebody will find a way to make surfing and doing activities in nature absolutely risk-free, we all deserve that. :roll:

I agree with the lifeguard 100% :!: I have been injured surfing several times, and each time it has been chest high or smaller :shock:

I think when it is big to really big it makes you more aware of the danger therefore you are more inclined to pay attention to what is going on around you. The more experienced you get the more you blow off a small day as " just playin' around " That's when it happens :cry:

As far as engaging in a sport in nature without danger, where's the fun in that :?:

Fooj;

Does the helmet still fit? Did the cranium thickness grow inward reducing volume? Inquiring minds want to know?

CPO, haven't tried it on recently. I think it grows like the rings of a tree.

Rooster, the world is a dangerous place and there are not enough lawyers. We need more paddling on everything and more lawyers and regulations. Please make me stop. I'm getting carpel tunnel, yet another hazard that needs to be addressed.

Oh, and Curtis, good to see your son and daughter ripping at the HB meet.

I almost went but decided to save myself the embarrassment.

Fooj;

Thanks, the kids are loving it. Both are excited about Santa Cruz.
We need you there representing the Islands.

So the helmet is like bark? Just leave it on and it will grow with your head.

Bark. I like that. Maybe I'll start wearing it again. With a bark spray job.

Yes, Northern Cali and Santa Cruz are on my short list for surf destinations.

Da Fins may be worth a try

Post by jules »

I got a pair of "Da Fins" last year for Christmas. Have you guys every tried that brand of fin? You can check out the website at www.dafin.com
There's a picture of a lifeguard running in them. Now, I've never actually done that, but they are super light and I can see how, if you really had to, it could be done. They're made by the same company that makes Kicks, which my brother swears by, but he's a bodyboarder, so they may be better for that, dunno.

I've tried duckfeet, Vipers, some Aussie brand, and a couple of other fins over the years, and so far, I like Da Fins the best. However, I think my legs get a better workout with 9" Vipers!

Hope y'all are getting some of this WNW we've got in for Valentine's Day!

Stay wet!

I think Duck Tape got what he needed and went surfing, had a great session, and exited the water safely.

the PA at Sandy's made me think of a day long ago on the North Shore. i went for a surf at Rocky's on a nice rising 4-6' swell and this little guy. obviously in the Army at Schofield approached me and asked where he could "rent" a board. i told him flat out he had no business surfing in these conditions. he got all irrational saying if all these "punk ass, wimpy surfers" could do it, he certainly could too. i said whatever and went out. later heard that evening a 19 year old soldier had drowned on the North Shore that afternoon. apparently he finally got a hold of a board.
there's no stopping stupid people from doing stupid things.
Hapuna statistically has more spinal injuries than anywhere else in the state

but i think if they built a hotel at Sandy's (like at Hapuna) Sandy's would win
