Gav, that was the same D'bar comp I also first witnessed what Simon could do and was not only blown away but sent packing.I was dragged up there by the DeLuker,Justice jugernaut.Having said that though I remember getting the same feeling and treatment watching you punch barrelrolls in SKC comps at the Bra and realised then it would be inevitable that one day you would be grouped in such esteamed company.

why does an "air" constitute good surfing and in particular good kneeboarding?
Skiers do it in the snow, divers do it of boards into pools. Trampolines anyone!
The whole joy about deck curve, fins, rails and rocker seem to be about wave and board connection not disconnection.
Seeing standups do skateboard style spins and hops on landing is to my eye rather ugly no matter how much balance it takes.
The odd air looks great but it falls more into a branch of acrobatics

I suppose it's because it shows the ability to generate enough speed and co-ordinate that with timing to launch above the wave. The guys that can do airs are pretty accomplished all round kneelos and do everything else well too. Turns, floats, airs it's all good and to be done well requires god wave knowledge and a well developed style.

TRUE!
but is the best surfing acrobat the mark of the best surfer in terms of all else.
The simpsons are the only ones being caught on film doing them a far as i have noted
If a contest is won on an "air " it would have to be the only thing seperating the surfers...id go on critical tubes and reos etc first

Arent airs considered part of 'all else'?? Why exclude airs from all other maneuvres that can be done on a wave?jdc wrote: mark of the best surfer in terms of all else.
Dont airs fit into these categories along with "everything else"?ASP judging criteria wrote: Judges analyze the following major elements when scoring waves:
Commitment and Degree of Difficulty
Innovative and Progressive Manoeuvres
Combination of Major Manoeuvres
Variety of Manoeuvres
Speed, Power and Flow
