2020 Kneeboard Surfing World Titles
TEAM KSUSA Qualifications

Kneeboard Surfing USA will be sending a team to the 2020 World Titles in Dunedin, New Zealand which will be held February 28-March 7, 2020. US Kneeriders who have competed in any KSUSA Titles, or who compete in one of the three 2019 contests mentioned below, will be eligible to join Team KSUSA. To ensure this is the most competitive team we have ever fielded, KSUSA plans to provide air fare for up to six to eight competitors. This is intended as extra incentive to attract as many of our best kneeriders as possible.

Qualifications for the top six, sponsored positions on the Team KSUSA will take place at three events to be held in 2019, including the KSUSA Titles February 15 at Huntington Pier, the Wildcoast Dempsey Holder Ocean Festival contest in September in Imperial Beach, and a third contest TBD (tentatively in October-November in Southern California). The cumulative results from each of these three events will be used to select up to six sponsored Team KSUSA members. In addition, potentially up to two wildcards, also sponsored, will be selected in late 2019 by members of the KSUSA executive team. The wildcard provision is to account for injury or work-related conflicts which prevent full participation in all three events, and to ensure that we send our strongest possible team to New Zealand. This effort is dependent upon our best kneeriders competing in these contests. KSUSA has reached out to this group (those who consistently make the Open Semis or Finals at the US Titles) and has secured participation commitments from the majority.

All US kneeriders are invited to participate in these events. Those who do not qualify for KSUSA sponsorship are still encouraged to participate in the 2020 World Titles at their own expense and are invited to be a member of Team KSUSA and be part of what we expect will be an incredible event.

KSUSA will be seeking donations from sponsors and other members of the US kneeboard community to fund this initiative. We have already secured a commitment from at least one major donor. In addition to providing air fare, we may hire a surf coach who will work with members of Team KSUSA in the months leading up to the 2020 World Titles. It is our intention to elevate our game and bring home multiple world titles.

2020 Kneeboard Surfing World Titles
Information for US Kneeboarders

The 2020 Kneeboard Surfing World Titles will be held February 29-March 7 in Dunedin, New Zealand on the South Island. This will be the third World Titles that the Kiwis have hosted. The 1999 and 2009 Worlds were based in the Taranaki Region on the North Island and were both outstanding events headed up by Murray Weir. New Zealand has incredible surf, offers beautiful scenery, and is a tremendous vacation destination.

Murray is again taking the lead on the 2020 Worlds and has shared the following information thus far:

  • The Contest will be mobile to help provide optimal conditions.
  • The main breaks that should be utilized are St. Clair and St. Kilda beaches in Dunedin or breaks out on the Aramoana Peninsula. Per Murray, “there are so many awesome breaks down south.”

Here’s a shot of a wave in the Dunedin area from Magic Seaweed:

Dunedin Wave

  • The SOUTH COAST BOARD RIDERS CLUB will serve as the host club
  • He anticipates most people will fly into Christchurch or Dunedin and pick up a car or camper van
  • There are plenty of lodging options near the main contest site at St. Clair Beach
  • They will be opening information channels on social media and a website soon

Every US kneerider who attended the 1999 or 2009 Worlds raved about how good of a trip it was. No doubt, the 2020 Worlds will also be a great one. US kneeriders who have competed in any KSUSA Titles, or who compete in one of the three 2019 contests we have planned will be eligible to join Team KSUSA. We are hoping to have our largest and best Team KSUSA ever for a World Titles event. The exchange rate is favorable for those in the US so please start researching and planning now.
